By August 22-23, median per-turn thinking was about 41% below the July reference and median per-invocation thinking had dropped to zero, even at xhigh and max effort. The dips lined up with product announcements. The thread reached 422 points and 292 comments, and Anthropic has not publicly addressed the data. If your harness depends on effort settings, log the thinking tokens you actually get back per call instead of assuming the effort level is honored.
