The open-core model funded open-source D2 with a closed-source IDE (D2 Studio) and a proprietary layout algorithm (TALA), and both are now being released rather than sold. The founder says his time will be limited and is offering paid maintainer contracts funded by donations, which is the concrete failure mode of open-core in dev tools: the proprietary half never carried the free half.
