Penn Researchers Create Hybrid Light-Matter Particles That Could Replace Electronic AI Computing Steps
University of Pennsylvania physicists created exciton-polaritons — hybrid particles that form when photons and electrons combine inside an atomically thin semiconductor — demonstrating all-light switching using only 4 quadrillionths of a joule. Published in Physical Review Letters, the breakthrough could eliminate the costly light-to-electronic conversions that slow current photonic AI chips during nonlinear activation steps. If scaled, this enables photonic chips that process visual data directly from cameras without repeated signal conversion, dramatically reducing energy consumption.
