Florida Sues OpenAI and Sam Altman — First State to File Safety Lawsuit, Seeks Billions in Penalties
Florida AG James Uthmeier filed the first state-level lawsuit against OpenAI on June 1, alleging 'utter disregard for the risk to human life' with four counts of deceptive trade practices, two counts of negligence, two product liability counts, and one each of fraud and public nuisance. The lawsuit seeks to hold Altman personally liable for potentially billions in penalties, citing 20+ prior lawsuits including the Tumbler Ridge school shooting, the FSU shooting, and seven user suicides/delusions linked to ChatGPT. This sets a precedent as the first state AG to take direct legal action against an AI company over product safety.
