Apple Opens Its Foundation Models Framework to Claude and Gemini — and Quietly Ships It on Linux
WWDC 2026 introduced a public Swift `LanguageModel` protocol that lets third-party providers — currently Anthropic's Claude and Google's Gemini — expose cloud models through the same API surface as Apple's on-device model, so apps can hot-swap local and cloud inference with a single line change. Apple also added image input to the on-device model, made a ~20B sparse model free to developers, and (buried in the release notes) shipped the framework running on Linux. The strategic read circulating among developers: 'the protocol is the moat, not the model' — Apple is positioning itself as the on-device AI orchestration layer for every iOS app regardless of which model actually runs.
