Godot Bans Almost All 'Vibe-Coded' and Autonomous-Agent Contributions to Protect Volunteer Maintainers
On July 1, 2026 the Godot Foundation rewrote its contributor guidelines to ban nearly all generative-AI code submissions and autonomous-agent PRs, and now requires new contributors (≤3 merged PRs) to get maintainer permission before submitting features or refactors. Maintainers cited an unsustainable flood of buggy AI PRs — cheap to generate, expensive to review — stating 'AI cannot take responsibility.' AI is permitted only for menial tasks like completion, regex, or find-and-replace, and must be disclosed. This is a landmark open-source governance backlash against agentic coding and a signal that 'ship AI PRs everywhere' now carries reputational and access risk.
