Figma Code Layers Enters Early Access This Month — Designers Can Edit Production Codebases on the Canvas
Code Layers, announced at Config on June 24, opened early access in July via the Config betas waitlist, letting users clone a repo onto the Figma canvas, convert any design layer into an executable code layer with one click or prompt, and push changes back — with npm package support for animation, motion and 3D libraries. The strategic read is that Figma is defending against Cursor-class tools by absorbing the handoff rather than the editor: if the design file *is* the codebase, the design-to-code gap that spawned an entire tooling category stops existing. Worth tracking whether early-access users actually run it against production repos or treat it as a prototyping toy.
