Codeberg Members Vote 358–144 to Ban Mostly-AI-Generated Repositories — and Cite €3,700 SSDs as the Reason
On July 22 Codeberg's membership passed a Terms of Use amendment prohibiting projects that "mostly consist of code written by" generative AI, at roughly 50% turnout with 14 abstentions; a second motion committed the forge to never train models on hosted code or user data. The stated driver is economic, not ideological — SSD costs jumped from roughly €700 to €3,700 each, partly from autonomous agent-built repos burning storage and CI. Enforcement is targeted rather than a purge: human-driven projects that occasionally accept LLM contributions are explicitly safe, and the policy landed days after a separate July 2 cryptocurrency ban, which together produced a widely-read "I regret migrating to Codeberg" post (431 points on HN July 24).
