Encord is strapping EEG headsets to workers because physical AI needs a dataset 5x YouTube
TechCrunch reports data-tooling company Encord is running a trial with German neuroscience startup Zander Labs in which workers wear camera-and-EEG headsets while performing manual tasks like dismantling Jenga towers. Zander Labs' Lukas Gehrke argues the amount of brain activity spent at each moment signals where a model should deploy its highest-effort reasoning — effectively using human cognitive load as a free difficulty annotation. Encord's economics make the case: densely annotated data is worth ~100x 'junky ego data' for a given task while costing only ~20x more to produce, and the company estimates a physical-AI breakthrough needs a corpus roughly five times the size of YouTube's video library.
