1,178 Frontier Lab Employees Sign 'Pacing the Frontier' Asking Washington to Build Tools to Slow AI, and OpenAI and Anthropic Endorse It Within Hours
A July 28 public statement signed by 1,178 employees across OpenAI, Anthropic, Google DeepMind, Meta, Microsoft, Mistral and Thinking Machines asks the U.S. government to lead an international effort to develop the technical and governance tools needed to deliberately pace automated AI research. Signatories include Jakub Pachocki, Mark Chen, John Schulman, Wojciech Zaremba, Jared Kaplan, Chris Olah, Jack Clark, Ben Mann, Anca Dragan, Shengjia Zhao, Jan Leike, and Boris Cherny, who created and leads Claude Code. Both OpenAI and Anthropic endorsed it as companies the same day, and it lands four days before the Trump administration's own deadline for a frontier-model security framework, which will be the first U.S. document to define a covered frontier model and describe pre-release government access.
