Zuckerberg Tells the FT a Chinese AI Model Ban Is Not an 'Effective Solution,' the Same Week Washington Bans Chinese Robots
In a Financial Times interview covered on 2026-07-29, Mark Zuckerberg argued the U.S. should accelerate domestic AI development and remove bottlenecks rather than restrict it, explicitly rejecting proposals to bar Chinese open-weight models from the American market and opposing broader chip export bans. The timing puts him directly opposite the FCC's 2026-07-28 Chinese robotics ban and opposite the OpenAI and Anthropic leadership backing the Pacing the Frontier petition. Meta, Nvidia and Microsoft sit on the open-weight side of this split; earlier in July a coalition of more than 20 tech companies signed a joint letter against open-weight restrictions.
