Science: More Than Half of AI Unicorns Have Never Led a Single Paper, and All of Them Together Wrote 1 in 1,000 AI Papers in 2025
A Science news analysis of a July 16 preprint, which hit 517 points and 266 comments on Hacker News on July 29, found that over half of billion-dollar-plus private AI companies have never played a leading role on a paper or preprint. OpenAI accounts for nearly 40 percent of all citations in the dataset — followed by Megvii and Hugging Face — yet of roughly 4,500 OpenAI employees, only eight have authored five or more qualifying papers. The stated reason is structural: unlike pharma, AI labs cannot patent-protect a disclosed technique, so publishing is pure giveaway.
