Executive search firm Christian & Timbers estimates only about 2,000 engineers in the US combine the sector knowledge, client gravitas, and applied AI experience needed to consistently produce enterprise AI returns. FDE postings grew 42-fold between 2023 and 2025 against a backdrop of MIT research putting the generative AI project failure rate at 95%, largely from brittle workflows misaligned with actual work. Both frontier labs have institutionalized this: Anthropic runs Ode and OpenAI runs its Deployment Company, staffed specifically to embed engineers inside customers.
