The EU AI Act's Content-Labeling Mandate Takes Effect Today, August 2, With Fines Up to 3% of Global Revenue
As of August 2, 2026, AI-generated images, audio and text designed to look authentic must carry a digital watermark or label when placed on the EU market; systems already in market get until December 2, 2026. Non-compliance carries fines up to 3% of total gross revenue. Exemptions cover personal content such as private group chats and material that is evidently artistic, satirical or fictional, and the EU is publishing standardized black-and-white labels while permitting compliant custom ones. If you ship generated media into the EU, the four-month grace period applies only to systems already on the market — anything new is in scope now.
