Expedia Buys Berlin's Layla and Pivots From One AI Concierge to a 'Multi-Agentic' Architecture
Expedia Group announced on July 31 that it acquired Layla, a Berlin conversational AI trip-planning and booking startup founded in 2023 with roughly 25 employees and about €5M ($5.7M) raised from First Minute Capital and M13. Terms were undisclosed; Layla keeps operating and its team joins Expedia's brands including Expedia.com, Hotels.com and Vrbo. The strategic read is the interesting part — Expedia is deprioritizing Romie, its all-in-one AI concierge, in favor of a multi-agent architecture of specialized agents, and is using the deal for Silicon Valley talent as much as technology.
