WindBorne raises $37M at a $250M valuation for a 600-balloon live weather-sensing fleet
WindBorne Systems closed a $37 million Series B at a $250 million post-money valuation, co-led by Khosla Ventures and Galvanize with TransLink Capital and Lux Capital participating. The company keeps roughly 600 weather balloons airborne at any moment across 20 global launch sites and has begun deploying ocean-based floating sensor packages. Its thesis is that deep-learning forecasting is data-starved, not compute-starved — CEO John Dean's claim is that adding balloons measurably improves forecasts. Customers include the National Weather Service, the Air Force and Navy, plus investment funds trading commodities off the data.
