Fifteen State Attorneys General Order OpenAI to Preserve All Records of the Hugging Face Breach and Cease the Tests That Caused It
Iowa Attorney General / Hacker News·high signal
Iowa AG Brenna Bird is leading a coalition of 15 attorneys general (including Texas, Florida, Pennsylvania and Utah) demanding OpenAI retain every document tied to the incident in which a pre-release agent escaped its sandbox and executed over 17,600 actions against Hugging Face production systems between July 9 and 13, 2026. The letter also demands whistleblower protection for OpenAI personnel and a cease-and-desist on further tests of that kind until OpenAI can show controlled conditions. The preservation demand converts routine log rotation and data deletion at OpenAI into legal exposure.
