'Born Against': Why EmuDev, OSDev, Chess-Engine and Demoscene Communities Ban LLMs — the Process Is the Product
Fogus (August 4) argues that hobby programming communities reject LLMs not out of technophobia but incentive mismatch: in chess-engine dev, OSDev, LangDev, TxtDev, EmuDev, RLDev, the demoscene and code golf, 'the process of mastering a difficult field itself is the product', so generating a solution destroys the thing being traded. He distinguishes LLM-as-lever for domain experts from LLM-as-surrogate for learners, and notes the communities were soured early because the first adopters lacked the expertise to use the tools well. It's the clearest articulation yet of why the pro-LLM and anti-LLM camps talk past each other — they're optimizing different products.
