Spotify Licenses AI Covers and Remixes From Merlin, Adding 30,000 Independent Labels to the Program

Spotify and Merlin announced a licensing agreement on August 4 extending Spotify's 'fan-made' AI covers and remixes product to Merlin's 30,000+ independent labels and distributors, whose artists can opt in individually. The feature will be a paid add-on for Premium subscribers, and Spotify frames the program on consent, credit and compensation. Merlin joins Universal Music Group in backing the effort, and Spotify has separately said it does not need deals with all three majors to launch — meaning the product ships whether or not Sony and Warner sign.
