Agent Plans Barely Exist in the Wild: 36,710 Repos Screened, 85 Plan Files Found in Just 10 Repositories
Following prior work on repository-shared context files like AGENTS.md, this study looks at the more task-oriented artifact — Agent Plans saved under tool-specific directories for agentic coding tools such as Claude Code and Gemini. Screening 36,710 engineered GitHub repositories yielded only 85 Markdown plan files across 10 repositories, an extremely concentrated corpus. Within it, plans supported maintenance, design, construction, quality work, and process support, and provided execution guidance most often through implementation steps, concrete files and locations, and testing and validation information — useful as a template, but the near-total absence of preserved plans says most teams treat agent planning as disposable.
