OpenAI announced on August 6 that Plus and Pro subscribers get an updated GPT-5.6 Sol with roughly 68% fewer factual errors, tighter output formatting, and a manual reasoning slider, while Free and Go users move to GPT-5.6 Luna as the default with unlimited text chats and a new 'Think' button for harder questions. Limits still apply to file uploads, images and other tools, and the-decoder framed the same move critically as pinning free users to OpenAI's weakest model. The reasoning slider is the builder-relevant piece — it exposes per-response thinking budget as a user-facing control rather than an API parameter.
