YC's Repeat-Founder Data: 454 Founders, 935 Records, and a GP Saying AI Lets One Person Build at 100x
Crunchbase News published an analysis on August 6, 2026 of a dataset shared directly by Y Combinator covering 454 repeat founders across 935 founder-company records from 2005 to 2026. Of those, 94% (428) went through twice, 25 went three times, and Justin Kan alone went four; the average gap between appearances is 5.1 years, but nearly 30% returned within two years and 38 returned in the same calendar year, while 61 waited a decade or more. Repeat founders peaked at 65 in 2025, which may reflect larger batches. YC general partner Aaron Epstein's explanation is the part that matters for SaaS competitive dynamics: better AI tooling lets an individual build at '10x or 100x what a traditional engineer would be able to build,' compressing the rebuild cost that used to keep second-time founders out of the market for years.
