Situational Awareness Puts $400M Into Source Foundry After Its AUM Collapsed From $45B to ~$10B
Leopold Aschenbrenner's AI-focused hedge fund invested $400 million into Source Foundry, bringing its total stake to $500 million, per TechCrunch (Aug 9) and Bloomberg (Aug 8), which first identified the fund's previously anonymous investment. The fund peaked at roughly $45 billion in assets before AI infrastructure losses in July 2026 cut it to about $10 billion; at the end of July it sold most of its public portfolio to Ken Griffin's Citadel while holding onto its Anthropic shares. Source Foundry, founded last year by Stanford researchers Abdulmalik Obaid and Joe Burg, does not fabricate silicon or compete with TSMC on process nodes — it targets making chip manufacturing faster and cheaper.
