CROSS-CATEGORY: A Wave of Self-Hosted 'No Subscription' SaaS Replacements Hit Show HN the Same 48 Hours Meta Open-Sourced a Local Agent Model
Across August 9–10, Show HN carried local-first replacements in four unrelated categories: Celerp, a self-hosted desktop ERP covering inventory, invoicing, purchasing, manufacturing, accounting, and CRM explicitly marketed as 'no subscription, no cloud required' (FastAPI + FastHTML + embedded Postgres, BSL-1.1 core with MIT modules); Preloop, running GitHub Actions locally or self-hosted in isolated microVMs; Lector, a FOSS self-hosted language reader; and Pacific Slate, a self-hosted model-agnostic multi-agent assistant. The common architectural bet is that the cloud dependency was the only thing justifying the subscription — and Meta's Apache-2.0 Muse Glimmer, released into the same window, removes the last hosted dependency by putting a capable agentic model on the same machine.
