Cohere Labs Ships North-Micro-Vision-Instruct, a 2.4B Native-Resolution VLM Under Apache 2.0
Cohere Labs released North Micro Vision Instruct, a 2.4B open-weight vision-language model under a genuinely permissive Apache 2.0 license, with native-resolution image processing that preserves aspect ratios rather than downsampling to a fixed grid. Its training curriculum centers on documents, charts, OCR and grounding, and its benchmark profile is strongest there. The language backbone carries a 128K context but the validated multimodal operating range is only up to 8K tokens — worth knowing before wiring it into a long document pipeline. Cohere positions it as a fine-tuning foundation rather than a finished product.
