SaaStr: The 'Mediocre Recycled' Executive Is the New Hiring Failure Mode Because AI Moves 3-5x Faster Than SaaS Did
Jason Lemkin argued on August 12 that founders are repeatedly hiring executives with impressive logos and no actual accomplishments, and that the AI era punishes this far harder because the pace of change is 3 to 5 times faster than traditional SaaS. Beyond the classic red flags (no CEO-level references, multiple short VP tenures, lateral moves between competitors, no talent willing to follow them) he names AI-specific ones: cannot use AI tools beyond casual queries, discusses AI only in abstractions, has never shipped a workflow or product with it, and asks for a large team immediately instead of leveraging tooling. His prescription is real AI-native work tests plus peer and customer references, and the operative signal for builders is that headcount requests are now a negative competence indicator.
