Community Research Finds Universal 'Danger Zone' at 50-56% Transformer Depth Across 6 Different Model Architectures
A practitioner ran layer-duplication surgery on six model architectures — Dense 32B, Hybrid 9B, MoE 30B, Dense 3B, a 7B cross-model transplant, and one additional — and found a consistent failure pattern: duplicating layers at approximately 50-56% depth kills model coherence in every architecture tested without exception. The architecture-agnostic nature of this 'danger zone' has direct implications for model merging, grafting, and the layer-surgery techniques increasingly used in the local model community to create SOTA-adjacent models at lower cost.
