Agentic Rust Translation Shrinks a Bioinformatics Pipeline 80x and Removes Its Unix Dependencies
Pairing agentic AI with static analysis to translate legacy Perl/Fortran-era bioinformatics code to Rust, the authors report on their own Bascet single-cell tool: size reduced ~80x, build time ~10x faster, and key steps >3x faster. Removing the Unix dependencies made Bascet the only single-cell pipeline able to run natively on Windows without a container. Prompts and supporting software are provided for systematic translation, and the claim to weigh is the economic one — large-scale refactoring of legacy scientific software now fits a limited budget.
