404 Media AirTagged a 1,000-Book Order and Followed It to Amazon's LAS8 'VGT3' Scanning Unit — Logo: a T-Rex Holding an Open Book
404 Media placed an Apple AirTag inside one volume of a ~1,000-book bulk order placed anonymously through the Biblio marketplace, and tracked it to the VGT3 section of Amazon's LAS8 warehouse in northeast Las Vegas, where workers cut spines off books to speed destructive scanning for Nova training data. It is the first hard confirmation of what booksellers had only suspected about price-insensitive anonymous bulk buyers. The story was picked up same-day by TechCrunch, Futurism, Slashdot and Simon Willison, who connected it to Anthropic's June 2025 book-scanning disclosure — pre-2022 print is now the scarce asset precisely because it is not online and not AI-contaminated.
