Nathan Lambert's Open-Source AI Thesis: 'Model Weights Are Transient' — The Training Recipe Is the Real Linux Analogue
Responding to NVIDIA's open-model push on Aug 17, Lambert argued the core of open-source AI is the training recipe, not the weights, and that NVIDIA is building models in the open 'so everyone can build their own later, avoiding a monopoly on intelligence.' He compared NVIDIA's bet to Meta and Google pouring money into the free web on the assumption that broader access produces a massive explosion in opportunity — then added the pointed aside 'I hope NVIDIA is as successful as google was in open source ;)'. The same week he announced hitting 1,000 paying subscribers at Interconnects.
