Mojo Ships Its Compiler and Toolchain Under Apache 2, and Formally Abandons the Python-Superset Goal It Announced in May 2023
Modular open-sourced the Mojo compiler and toolchain under Apache 2 on August 18, a week after shipping 1.0 and three years after the original May 2023 commitment. The more consequential detail is the strategic reversal: the roadmap now says Mojo 'may or may not evolve into a full superset of Python, and it's okay if it doesn't,' abandoning the bootstrap-off-Python's-ecosystem plan in favor of being its own GPU programming language with Python-inspired syntax. Simon Willison flags the team's justification, that AI-assisted coding tools already handle Python-to-Mojo migration today, which is a real bet that agents replace language compatibility as a migration path.
