Boris Cherny Closed the AGENTS.md Request as 'Completed' Without Implementing It, and 293 Points of HN Read It as Lock-In
Issue 6235 on anthropics/claude-code asks Claude Code to read AGENTS.md, the config file Codex, Pi and most other harnesses already load, instead of only CLAUDE.md. Claude Code lead Boris Cherny closed it as 'completed' with no implementation, which put it on HN at 293 points and 186 comments. The top-voted framing: 'Making your tool less compatible with the rest of the ecosystem at large not only makes it harder to move to your tool, but also harder to move away.' Counter-commenters point out that `ln -s AGENTS.md CLAUDE.md` or an `@AGENTS.md` include solves it in one line, which is exactly why the refusal reads as deliberate rather than technical.
