Pew: 52% of Americans are more concerned than excited about AI, up from 37% in 2021
TechCrunch pulled together three data sets showing adoption and acceptance moving in opposite directions. A Pew study released August 18 puts Americans who are more concerned than excited about AI in daily life at 52%, up from 37% in 2021; an Economist/YouGov poll from May 9 to 11 found over 70% think AI is advancing too fast; and an August 13 CNBC poll of 18 to 34 year olds found a majority distrust nine named AI industry leaders to act responsibly. A National Republican Senatorial Committee memo from August is now circulating on the same theme, which puts the backlash inside campaign strategy rather than just polling.
