Waymo Doubles Lobbying Spend as the Robotaxi Rulebook Fight With Uber Escalates
Alphabet-owned Waymo has doubled its lobbying outlay to push US regulators toward clearing fully autonomous taxi service, against an Uber position favoring hybrid networks that mix human drivers with driverless vehicles. Uber lobbyists in New Jersey have circulated legislation requiring human drivers to perform 85% of rideshare work over three years, which would break Waymo's model outright. The two went from partners to competitors this year, and the federal rulebook they are fighting over will set which model is legal by default.
