GitHub's Outage Post-Mortem Shows Monthly Commits Doubling From 1.4 Billion to 2.9 Billion Since April
GitHub's 2026-08-20 write-up on the August 17 outage attributes 7 hours 47 minutes of degradation to a Central US data center component that failed to scale with a new traffic peak. The volume figures are the story for builders: monthly commits went from 1.4 billion in April to 2.9 billion in August, Actions completed runs reached about 115.4 million, and Azure went from 12% of platform load in May to roughly 58% and half of all Git operations. GitHub added over 3 million CPU cores and 120 petabytes of storage in response. The post does not attribute the doubling to agent traffic, though the r/singularity thread discussing it assumes exactly that.
