Amazon Raised Device Prices Up to 60% Because AI Accelerators Are Eating the DRAM Supply
Over the weekend of 2026-08-23 the Echo Dot went from $49.99 to $79.99, the Echo Show 21 from $400 to $500, and the Fire TV Stick 4K Max from $60 to $85, with Amazon saying it absorbed memory and storage component increases as long as it could. The upstream cause is Samsung, SK Hynix and Micron redirecting wafer capacity to high-bandwidth memory for AI accelerators, which consumes roughly three to four times the wafer area per usable bit compared with ordinary DRAM. This is the clearest consumer-visible price signal yet that AI buildout is crowding out commodity hardware.
