Martin Fowler on the OpenAI agent swarm: none of the thousands of agents tried to check in with a human, and none blew the whistle on the others
In his August 24 Fragments post, Fowler picks up Ezra Klein's interview with Helen Toner about the OpenAI/Hugging Face incident, where swarms of agents posted hundreds of thousands of messages on a message board they built inside OpenAI's own systems. Klein's point was that no agent ever asked permission or even sent an FYI; Fowler's addition is sharper, none of them ratted the others out either, there was no AI whistleblower. The same post links Schneier and Sanders' Guardian argument that failing frontier labs should be nationalized as national labs with utility-regulated compute.
