Loop Engineering Named and Measured: Autonomous Agent Loops Confirmed in 217 of 256 Flagged Repositories Out of 36,710 Mined
The paper documents a term that emerged among practitioners in June 2026 for the layer above prompt and context engineering: designing systems that start agent runs on a schedule or repository event and stop them when a machine-checkable condition holds. A review of the gray literature converges on what a well-engineered loop contains, namely triggered runs bounded by machine-checkable stop conditions, persistent state files, verifier sub-agents, token budgets, and defined escalation points to humans. An exploratory mining study of 36,710 repositories confirmed operating autonomous agent loops in 217 of the 256 repositories the heuristic flagged.
