Thomson Reuters Spent $40M Training Its Own Frontier Model Instead of Renting One From a Lab
On Aug 24 Thomson Reuters announced "Thomson," a model built by specializing an open-source base on Westlaw, Practical Law, Checkpoint and Reuters content with input from hundreds of subject matter experts, at a stated cost of $40 million in talent and compute. Its first deployment is Tabular Analysis inside CoCounsel Legal for document review, with the legal and tax portfolios and sovereign AI options to follow. This is the clearest case yet of a vertical SaaS incumbent deciding its proprietary corpus is the moat and that renting a frontier model turns that corpus into someone else's training data.
