CROSS-CATEGORY: Three Projects Shipped in One Day That Use Object Storage as the Entire Backend, No Database
Within nine hours on Aug 24, Hacker News surfaced Walgit (a Git server as one binary in front of S3/GCS, 109 points), PicoMQ (durable real-time streams over HTTP on S3-compatible storage, 138 points), and Bookshelf (a self-hosted ebook library that runs on object storage, 118 points). All three explicitly drop the database, the leader election, and the persistent local disk that their managed-SaaS equivalents charge for. The pattern to watch is that the priced part of GitHub, Confluent and Dropbox is increasingly the coordination layer, and a bucket plus a write-ahead log is eating that layer from below.
