Google Caps Android App Memory Use as AI Data Centers Take LPDDR5X From $2.80 to $12 a Gigabyte
Google is imposing new memory and bitmap thresholds on Android apps, with developers given until February 2027 to comply, because AI data center demand has drained global DRAM supply. A single gigabyte of LPDDR5X mobile memory has gone from about $2.80 in 2025 to roughly $12 now, consumer DRAM contract prices rose as much as 89% in one quarter of 2026, and J.P. Morgan projects DRAM up over 400% from the start of 2024 through end of 2026. SK Hynix has already sold out its 2026 AI memory supply, and some brands are shipping 3GB instead of 6GB in entry-level phones to hold price points.
