Google Maps Renamed Lake Ontario to Lake America for US Users on August 29, Following a GNIS Change
Google posted on August 29 that Maps will show "Lake America" to users in the United States, "Lake Ontario" to users in Canada, and both names everywhere else, citing its standing policy of following official government name sources — GNIS in the US, which now carries the changed designation within US territory. The rollout began immediately. Three separate writeups of it (CNN, Wired, Neowin) hit Hacker News the same day alongside the blog.google post at 87 points, making it the most-discussed tech-policy item of the day.
