GitHub made Copilot content exclusions generally available in the Copilot app and CLI

Announced 2026-09-02T18:14Z, the GitHub Copilot app and Copilot CLI now respect content exclusion policies configured by enterprise, organization and repository administrators, so excluded files are not used as context. Until this shipped, exclusion policies were enforced in some surfaces but not in the agentic app and CLI paths, meaning a policy that looked configured was not actually holding for CLI-driven agent runs. It is limited to Copilot Business and Copilot Enterprise.
