CAE agent study asks what domain agents actually need beyond a generic harness

arXiv 2609.03718, submitted 2026-09-03, tests whether the domain-specific machinery that computer-aided-engineering agents bolt on — multi-agent decomposition, domain retrieval, scripted reflection — earns its place over a generic harness driving OpenFOAM, FEniCS or COMSOL. This is the same question builders face every time they consider a specialist sub-agent instead of a better tool description, and it is one of the few papers testing it against solvers where correctness is externally checkable rather than judged by another model.
