Ecma International Standardizes NLIP, an Application-Layer Protocol for Cross-Framework Agent Interoperability
The Natural Language Interaction Protocol, developed across companies and universities and standardized by Ecma International, defines a lightweight semantic message envelope carried over existing transports including HTTP/HTTPS, WebSocket and AMQP, letting NLIP-aware agents and gateways adapt between clients, agents, local context stores, ontologies, tools, enterprise services and heterogeneous underlying protocols. The paper covers the message model, transport bindings, security-by-design considerations, a reference implementation, adoption signals and the relationship to MCP and A2A. The signal for builders is less the protocol itself than the fact that agent interoperability now has a formal standards-body track running alongside the vendor-driven MCP and A2A efforts.
