ChatGPT, Claude and Grok Went Down Within Minutes of Each Other and No Shared Cause Has Been Named
On September 3, 2026 OpenAI, Anthropic and xAI all suffered outages beginning around mid-morning EDT, with Downdetector spikes across the three landing within minutes. The disclosed causes do not line up: SpaceX blamed an outage at its Memphis compute center for Grok, OpenAI attributed a 34-minute ChatGPT and Codex window (7:43 to 8:17 am PT) to a routing error, and Anthropic said it identified the cause but did not disclose it. No public evidence yet ties the events to one cloud, CDN or routing failure, which is why the HN thread asking why they were simultaneous drew 691 comments and Wired ran a piece on the silence.
