A federal judge rejected xAI's bid to block Minnesota's AI nudification ban, the first ruling against an AI lab's First Amendment challenge to a state model law
US District Judge Donovan Frank denied xAI a preliminary injunction against Minnesota's law barring website operators, software developers and others from letting users 'nudify' images of identifiable people, ruling in a 14-page order that xAI failed to show irreparable harm and that the state is within its rights. The law took effect August 1, passed the Minnesota House 132-1 and the Senate 65-0, and empowers the state Attorney General to levy penalties up to $500,000 per violation. The ruling landed September 4 and hit r/artificial at 902 upvotes today; the exposure attaching to developers and not just platforms is the part that matters for anyone shipping image tooling.
