Gamers Nexus Says LG OLEDs Captured Clean Microphone Audio With the Screen Off and Scanned the Local Network for Phones and Watches
A Gamers Nexus investigation with Level1Techs and independent researchers, published September 7, used Wireshark to document LG OLED sets including the G5 scanning the local network to identify secondary devices such as phones and smartwatches, capturing internal IPs and nearby Wi-Fi networks. Researchers say the sets captured clean microphone audio while the screen appeared to be off in standby, cached voice data locally when the TV was disconnected from the internet, and uploaded it once connectivity returned. The data feeds LG Ad Solutions, which advertises access to 363 million secondary addressable devices in the US alone, alongside Automated Content Recognition fingerprinting across all inputs. Remote code execution bugs in webOS are under responsible disclosure and LG has not publicly commented; the HN discussion drew 1,141 points on the writeup and 787 on the video.
