89.6% of European Companies Running a CDN Are Behind Cloudflare, per a 44,143-Company Fingerprinting Study
CipherCue published on September 8 a scan of European companies across eight countries using HTTP response fingerprinting and DNS rather than third-party datasets. Of 44,143 companies where a CDN was detected, 39,547 were on Cloudflare (89.6%), with Amazon CloudFront a distant second at 3,112 detections, Fastly at 1,299 and Akamai at 396. Country shares run from 95.6% in the Netherlands and 93.2% in the UK down to 78.8% in Spain and Ireland. The authors flag their own sampling bias toward small and mid-sized companies, which favors Cloudflare's free tier, and the takeaway they draw is a correlated-failure one: an incident at Cloudflare is most of the European market's outage on the same afternoon.
