Massachusetts became the third state in three months to restrict data center development
TechCrunch reported on 2026-09-09 that Massachusetts imposed new clean power requirements on data center development, making it the third state in as many months to add restrictions. The cadence is the story: state-level siting and power rules are now arriving faster than the announced buildouts they constrain. MIT Technology Review made the companion argument the same week, using the 22 July 2026 Ashburn transmission fault that dropped more than 3 gigawatts of load in seconds to argue the grid problem is architectural rather than a matter of generation capacity.
